Social Studies
The Archdiocesan Graded Course of study for Social Studies was approved in 2003. The introduction, we read the purpose of the study:
"In cooperation with other subject areas, the social sciences aim at sharpening the analytical abilities of the students to identify, define, and resolve social problems. Intellectually and effectively, the social sciences attempt to give students that global perspective which will help them become responsible citizens of the world community.
The unique aspect of the social sciences as taught in a Catholic school consists of an emphasis based on peace and justice and the dignity and sacredness of the human person. In a Catholic school, students of social studies will marvel at the beauty of God's creation and be strengthened by their faith because of it."
Kindergarten: A Child's Place in the Family, Community and World Social Studies in Kindergarten will be an introduction to customs, cultural traditions, geography and relationships. Kindergarten will develop an awareness of rules and responsibility.
Grade 1: A Member of Families, Communities and the World
First Graders will build an understanding of being a part of our world as members of families, communities and countries by exploring history, cultures, and geography.
Grade 2: Communities - Past, Present, Near and Far
In the Second grade students will learn about the types of Communities and the people who work together in them. The students will understand the importance of laws and rules and of being a good citizen. They will learn basic map skills. They will deepen their knowledge of various cultures at home and around the world.
Grade 3: History through People and Places
Third Graders will define history through people and places by developing map skills, citizenship, being active consumers and producers, and respecting and knowing ethnic heritage.

Grade 4: Ohio: Its Past, Its Location, Its Government and Geographic Regions of North America
The state of Ohio is the focus for one semester of grade four. Students will learn geography, history, government and economy of Ohio. The other semester of fourth grade will be dedicated to the geography, land and resources of North America.

Grade 5: Geographic Regions of the World and World History up to the fall of the Roman Empire
The fifth grade year focuses on the Geography of the World for one semester. The concentration on World History will be both geographic and historic. Students will study the regions' earliest peoples in order to understand human interactions with the environment at that time.

Grade 6: World Studies from the Middle Ages through the Twentieth Century
The sixth grade year focuses on the study of the world from the fall of the Roman Empire to the present. Students learn that each historic event is shaped by its geographic setting, the culture of the people, economic conditions, governmental decisions, and citizen action.

Grade 7: United States Studies from 1607 to 1877: Colonization through Reconstruction
The seventh grade students study U.S. History from European colonization through Reconstruction (1877). Emphasis will be placed on the role of Ohio in the development of the U.S. The establishment of our Democratic form of government will be explored from its' English origins emphasizing its ability to reflect the needs of changing times. Current Events is a constant focus throughout the year.

Grade 8: United States Studies from 1877 - Post-Reconstruction through the 20th Century an emphasis on Civics and Government
Emphasis will be placed on Ohio's central role in the development of the U.S. as a major world power. The study of the Constitution will reinforce the changes in civil and economic rights that political parties, interest groups and religious organizations strived to achieve during the past two centuries. Current Events is a constant focus throughout the year.
